To develop, promote and deliver child-focused, family- centered, community based and culturally appropriate services which improve the health, safety, education and economic well being of the youth and their families on the west side of Chicago.
Our Work, Program Overview
Given the high poverty rate, unacceptable high school drop out rates and crime and gang activity, Nueva Esperanza (NE) considers many of its participants at risk. Consequently, the potential for academic success is much more challenging!
NE serves at its peak over 100 public high school students per week and an additional core group of 11 private school/scholarship students in the Hermosa Park, Belmont-Cragin and Humboldt Park neighborhoods. The majority of the students and families we serve are Latino/Hispanic.
The Nueva Esperanza Center is housed at Vida Nueva Church which is located directly across the street from Kelvyn Park High School. This gives students and families easy access to our programs services.
A word from the Executive Director
Welcome to Nueva Esperanza Urban Youth Mission
Our mission is to develop, promote and deliver youth focused, family centered, community based, and culturally appropriate services which improve the health, safety, education, economic and overall well-being of the youth and their families on the northwest side of Chicago’s Hermosa Park neighborhood.
We offer scholarship, academic, sports, arts, career and personal development programs to high school students with the intent of lowering the Latino high school drop out rate, moving our youth forward towards college, and providing them with a warm, inviting and safe place to spend time during the most critical after-school hours. Studies show that not having a positive place to go after school contributes to an increase in drug and alcohol abuse, gang activity, and other crimes; our youth also become more vulnerable to teen pregnancy. Such behaviors lead to the inevitable negative outcome: involvement in the juvenile court system. To alter this course of events, Nueva Esperanza provides students with resources that might otherwise be inaccessible. We value our children and our goal is to provide them a safe haven away from the real dangers of the ever-increasing violence on city streets. By taking a holistic approach through exposing students to academics, careers, sports and personal development, we believe that, in essence, we can create a well rounded young adult with a positive self image. Most importantly, we at the Nueva Esperanza Center have adopted a culture of belief that if a student is given the necessary tools to succeed, then that student will exceed all expectations made for him or her.

Diana Almanza, Executive Director
